Redefining Philanthropy for Resilience and Unity in Uncertain Times

A friend sent me this image, and I wish I knew its source. As a lover of words, I needed to understand its meaning, which sparked thoughts about my work.

November has brought up many emotions and thoughts for many people. To understand these feelings better, I have engaged in readings and discussions, looking for the right words and mindset to share my insights. During this process, I came across a word from the Okinawan language that inspired me to combine my reflections. Here they are.

As we celebrate National Philanthropy Day, the concept of yuimaru — the spirit of community, cooperation, and mutual support — feels especially relevant.

In these divisive times, when economic uncertainties and social challenges strain our communities, yuimaru reminds us of an essential truth: our collective strength lies in our commitment to one another. Even amid financial instability, there is an abundance of resources and assets that, if strategically reinvested, can fuel a new era of sustainable, asset-based community infrastructure, supports and spcaes.

Philanthropy has always been a powerful force for good, but to lead during challenging times, we need to evolve how we think about giving. Traditional donations are invaluable, but when philanthropy is complemented by social entrepreneurial activity and earned income streams, we unlock the potential to build robust, sustainable systems that transcend typical donor cycles. This approach doesn’t just prop up organizations — it transforms them into resilient pillars of the community. Through this model, we create lasting social impact that empowers communities rather than leaving them reliant on short-term interventions.

There is more than enough wealth and innovation within our society to drive change, but it requires a shift in mindset. In the third and fourth sectors — the nonprofit and social enterprise spaces — you, as philanthropists, nonprofit leaders, social entrepreneurs, and community organizers, play a crucial role. We can no longer afford to approach philanthropy as charity alone. Instead, we must approach it as an investment: strategic, impactful, and aimed at building lasting assets that benefit everyone. By blending philanthropy with revenue-generating innovation, we can build infrastructure that generates ongoing value through affordable housing initiatives, community health programs, local food systems, or education access.

Yuimaru compels us to look beyond individual contributions and toward collective impact. It encourages us to move past the “rescue” mindset and embrace one of co-creation, where everyone has a stake and a role in creating a thriving society. Through cooperation and mutual support, we can channel both philanthropic dollars and social enterprise profits into long-term solutions that address root causes, build resilience, and close systemic gaps. This collective impact approach holds the promise of a brighter, more equitable future.

As we look forward and plan for 2025, let’s commit to acting with the spirit of yuimaru. Let’s rethink our approach to giving, blending traditional philanthropy with entrepreneurial strategies to create self-sustaining, high-impact organizations that can withstand the pressures of an uncertain world. This isn’t just about generosity; it’s about leadership, vision, and a belief that together, we can build a society where every community has the resources, opportunity, and support it needs to thrive.

And finally, more than ever, don't underestimate your ability and skills to influence the narrative, shift the trend, or inspire impact. We are the connectors, the facilitators of cooperation, and the bridges that bring people together to work toward a common good. Each of us holds the power to make a difference, advocate for sustainable solutions, and lead with purpose and resilience. As we carry forward the spirit of yuimaru, let's remember that our individual actions—no matter how small—contribute to a larger movement. With our collective efforts, we can build a future rooted in unity, collaboration, and bring about lasting social change that we can all be hopeful and optimistic about.
